It may also be observed that the Asiatic Petroleum Company (British) and the Standard Oil Company (American) have kerosene oil tanks and tin-making factories at most of the treaty ports; and so far this business remains entirely in the hands of these two companies. The only other foreign firms which are so widely distributed throughout the cities of China are the British and American Tobacco Company and the Singer Sewing Machine Company.

Geographically speaking. Hong Kong and Shanghai are the pillars of the British position. Economically speaking. our principal assets are our commercial and industrial position at Hong Kong, and our preponderance hitherto in trade, banking and finance, in railway construction, shipping and marine engineering and our important share in the cotton industry of Shanghai.
